  • Our Flock of Birds Lesson Plan-- Kindergarten

Our Flock of Birds Lesson Plan-- Kindergarten

Goal: Students will extend their motor skills and explore their imaginations while crafting three dimensional birds.

Materials: Model Magic, toothpicks, glue, paint, birds sounds, "Feathers for Lunch" by Lois Elhert

    Objectives: Students will:
Create a three dimensional bird model
Learn about birds and creatively interpret this knowledge
Be able to think critically about how the shape/size color of their bird relates to their physical characteristics
Explore a modeling material in three dimensions

Motivation: Students will listen to several bird sounds and be asked to identify them. Students will also listen carefully for a woodpecker. (CD "morning Songbirds--can be bought on Amazon.com) Students will be asked what kind of birds they have seen. What size and shape where they. What kinds of noises did they make? Students will be read "Feathers for Lunch" by Lois Elhert. Students will listen to the story and notice many different types of birds. The teacher will invite the students to think about an imaginary bird. Where does it live, what does it eat? Teacher will demonstrate how to use model magic to create three dimensional forms.

    Procedures:
Students will decide what kind of bird to make.
Students will knead the model magic and create three dimensional forms to join together to create a bird shape.
Toothpicks will be used a "bones" to hold the bird together.
Students can flatten and shape additional forms to add to the body.
A paper clip will be used as a hanger/name tag for the bird.
Students will paint and add details to their bird once it's dried.
Birds will be hung from a tree to create a class flock of birds.

Closure: The class will gather around their flock of birds. Students will be asked to point out certain birds that are interesting to them. We will discuss that like people, ass the birds are different, yet fly in the same collective flock.

Evaluation: Students will be asked to talk about their imaginary birds. Where do they live, what do they eat etc. A fine example of this project will feature a carefully crafted bird that is modeled in three dimensions. Careful thought should be given to what kind of bird they wanted to make. Students will be asked to name their bird and draw several pictures of their birds.

  • "Batik" Bags

    "Batik" Bags

    Batik Pouches

Materials: White cotton fabric cut into approx 6 x 16 in strips, masking tape, white oil pastels, liquid water colors, drawing paper, 12x18 in construction paper, needles and thread or sewing machine, model magic.

Preparation: Tape the white fabric onto a piece of construction paper to make it easier for the students to draw their designs. The paper will also act as a blotter when they are painting.

Day 1: We begin this project by discussing different types of lines, and patterns. Students are asked to sketch 2 different patterns using lines only. The most interesting design is selected and transferred onto the white fabric using the oil pastels. Students should make their lines large--- small lines or complicated lines are difficult to draw with oil pastel.

Day 2: Students use liquid watercolors to paint their fabric strips. Encourage the students to create a pattern using color. Leave no white spots.

Day 3: Students can sew the bags by hand, or you can assist them with the sewing machine. If sewing by hand, they can use the attached paper to help the students with sewing stitches.

Day 4: Students will create small objects to put in their bags. Discuss symbols, and have students sketch small objects to symbolize them. Give each student a small ball of model magic to create their objects with. Paint the object with watercolor or liquid watercolor and place inside of special pouches.

  • KIndergarten Shape Monsters

    KIndergarten Shape Monsters

In this lesson kindergarten students used shapes to create "monsters". I began the lesson by reading the book Monster Math. We then brainstormed different ideas to create monsters. Students used one large shapes for their monsters body, and then added details such as eyes, teeth, leg etc. using more shapes. We painted the monsters using flourescent acrylic paints--- I instructed the kids to use only one color for their monsters body, and and many other colors as they wished for the details. A background was made on a seperate piece of paper. Students selected 3 colors of glitter paint--- the colors were painted across the whole page and scraped with a notched cardboard comb to create an interesting swirly effect. The monsters (and baby monsters if the child wished) we cut out and glued to the background.

  • Thrift Store Lace Bag Tutorial

    Thrift Store Lace Bag Tutorial

We love to create things with
vintage lace from Canton and other
flea markets, but what if you
don't have access to flea markets?

    {this is part of our vintage stash }

We decided to see what we could
find at local thrift stores and
made a fun shopping day out of it!

Digging through all the old clothes
was such fun and we found some great
    dresses and shirts to create
    lace and ruffles ~

This full lace dress was only $1.99!

Isaac was worn out from all our shopping :)

Here are some of our finds ~

Next, we made black tea and tea dyed
the white lace and dresses ~

Just hang them in the sun to dry ~

Once they were dry, we cut up
the dresses to get the fabric
we needed for our project ~

We used a tea dyed muslin
    drawstring bag ~

We pinned the lace to the bag
and cut and gathered the skirt fabric
to make a ruffle for the bottom of the bag.
    We then sewed the lace
and the ruffle to the bag ~

    Afterwards, we chose buttons,
a tattered rose, and lace to
embellish the bag. This is where
    you want to get creative!
*Click here for the rose tutorial ~

    Here is the final project!

    And another bag from a
baby girl dress we found ~

We had so much fun today!
Go to your thrift store for inspiration :)

  • 2nd Grade Toucans

    2nd Grade Toucans

My second grade students have been working quite fastidiously on these festive toucans, and finally they are complete! First the students learned a little about toucans and sketched one using a black crayon on a 12x 18 in piece of white tag board. We then worked carefully to paint the background a shade a blue. After the backgrounds were dry, the students painted the bodies of the toucans black and white. I then demonstrated how to use water soluble oil pastels to create colorful beaks. Finally students used the funky paper we created a few weeks ago to create flowers, leaves and any other details the students wished to add. Overall, I think these came out fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Kindergarten Collage Castles

    Kindergarten Collage Castles

This year the Kindergarten students worked really hard to create these beautiful collage castles for our annual art show. The project was broken down into several smaller one day projects and then put together into a finished product.

Students first began by painting and stamping a piece of paper for their grass. The students were given several colors of green paint and asked to paint their entire paper with one color. Next they used found objects to dip in green, blue, and white paint and printed on top of their painted papers. We let these papers dry and moved onto the next step.

Students then created a beautiful sparkly sky. We began the lesson by talking about cool colors. The kindergartners were given Glitter paint (Sargent Brand) and had to paint their entire paper with plenty of sparkly paint. They used notched cardboard scrapers to add swirls and designs to their sky.

We then created a castle on a small piece of tag board and painted them with silver paint. The castles were cut out-- with some help from me and volunteers.

The collage was put together on the last day. The students drew a wavy "ground line" on the back of their green paper and cut it out. They attached their ground to the sky, being careful to line up the bottom, and then glued on their castle. Students added clouds and used oil pastels to add details to their fabulous creations.

These castles took awhile to create, but the result was outstanding!!! They looked great when displayed alongside their clay kings and queens.

  • Kindergarten Clay Kings and Queens

    Kindergarten Clay Kings and Queens

These little guys were created for our annual "Academic Fair". Students were asked to create themselves as a king or queen.

    Materials:
    Model Magic
Black construction paper- cut into 6x9 in pieces
    Glue
    Watercolor paint/brushes/water
    Googly eyes
    Feathers, beads, sequins, jewels, etc.

    Day 1:
First demonstrate basic techniques for clay sculpting. Have students come up with ideas for shapes to use for head, body, arms and legs. Each students should first start off by creating a ball for a head and then gently flattening it. Then add a neck, body, etc. Demonstrate how to blend the clay together to create a stronger figure. Label with the student's name and allow to dry.

    Day 2:
Glue down any limbs or parts that have come loose or broken off-- glue directly to construction paper. Have the students paint their figure. I found that it is best for the students to first paint the skin and then their clothes. Make sure to review with the students what parts of the body will be painted with a skin tone--- there are always a few that want to paint the entire body skin colored (and make their figure look naked!).

    Day 3:
Embellish!! Pass out lots of fun little stuff and let the kids go wild. Go around and make sure there are no loose parts or limbs.

Grateful for such an honor, I am also very humbled. It is because of the amazing group of women that collectively make up Make Mine Pink, that I have received this honor. I will proudly accept this honor for all of the members at MMP."

Joyce founded in Make Mine Pink 2004, from a personal need to find other like- minded women who, like herself, were struggling to not only get their businesses started, but to gain the recognition businesses needed to succeed. • Welcome my Daughter, Kristin

    Welcome my Daughter, Kristin

    I am really excited to
    have my daughter Kristin
join me at Katies Rose Cottage!

    From Kristin.....

I am so excited to be starting this adventure with my mom :)
It is a joy to be able to work with her,
    learn from her,
    and get to indulge in
all things vintage! Here's a little about me~

My husband James and I have been married for 5 years
    and we have a
little baby boy on the way (due less a couple of weeks from now!).
We are so excited and blessed to be parents and
I cannot wait to share our
little family with you as we grow!
I love to travel, so having a pilot for a dad and a travel photographer
for a husband works out perfectly
;) I adore cooking, creating, and all things vintage!
    I've been
praying about God's direction for my job
    for about three years and
with a little one on the way, I knew I had to make a change and start
doing something that will spark my passions
    . While I've always wanted
to own my own business as so many member's
    of my family do, the
    opportunity just never presented itself.
However, going on all of my
    mom's shopping adventures,
rummaging through her office to create new
treasures, and seeing the joy she has
in her job made me secretly want
    to work alongside her.
Then, as I watched her grow in her business,
    God did an amazing work!
He opened the door for me to partner with my
mom so I can finally do what I am so passionate about :)
    I am thrilled
and blessed to have the opprtunity
to work along side of a godly,
creative, and beautiful woman, my mom :)

  • Pink Friday "For the Birds"

    Pink Friday "For the Birds"

Spring is here, and you don’t even need to look outside your kitchen window or open your front door to know it. Just waking up to the sweet melody of a backyard robin cheerily singing outside your window is enough to tell you that life is renewed and spring is reborn. The birds of spring have returned and the earth reawakens.

Outside, in our fenced yards and open fields, brightly colored bluebirds and streaked song sparrows flit between tree branches and land carefully among the budding leaves. Singing songs of love to each other, chirping madly over jealousies. Bringing home odds and ends to build their nests - bits of bright string, broken twigs. Items insignificant to everyone else, but the stuff of life for the feathered set.
With the return of spring, we find our winged friends building homes in every unclaimed corner…. under the eaves of buildings, in riverbanks, on rocky ledges, suspended from tips of tree branches, hidden under flaps of loose bark. Even in the nest boxes we offer up with hope. Hanging baskets, mail boxes, old boots, flower pots. Any place that somehow looks like home.
No matter where we live, or what the season, avian accessories create eternal springtime in our homes too. Birds and their nests placed carefully upon our shelves, painted delicately on a wall, stitched on a delicate needlepoint. Perhaps we invite into our homes the same birds we see each spring.

Parrot green, robin’s egg blue, bright canary yellow, flamingo pink. A rainbow of color unfurls inside and out of our homes in the hopes of eternal spring.

Make sure and join Katies Rose Cottage and the participating shops at Make Mine Pink for Pink Friday "For the Birds" ~
